Cauchemar is a collaborative publication by Susanne Clausen and Pavlo Kerestey, developed within their joint practice as Szuper Gallery. Structured as both documentation and reflection, the book moves across media and registers, foregrounding mediation itself as a central concern.
The opening text centres on the radio interview that forms the conceptual core of the project: a public conversation between a Ukrainian writer and a German journalist. It attends to the structure and atmosphere of this exchange, focusing on hesitation, interruption, imbalance, and the violence embedded within the dialogue. The conversation reveals a persistent asymmetry, in which the urgency of lived experience is met with distancing, abstraction, or redirection, pointing to broader fractures within European political discourse.
The interview is restaged through a dual-screen video in which handmade puppets, modelled as distorted doubles of the artists, stand in for the original speakers. These figures act as proxies, carrying the recorded voices while making visible a condition of displacement. The gap between voice and body becomes central. Film stills and excerpts lead into a complete English translation of the interview, where duration and repetition allow the strain of the exchange to register.
Presented within an installation at Voloshyn Gallery in Miami, the work extends into space. Text, moving image, and sculptural elements intersect, shifting the interview from broadcast to performance to installation. The work stages its material without resolving it.
Alongside this, drawings by Susanne Clausen and a series of paintings by Pavlo Kerestey rework archival photographs, family images, and circulated media fragments. Through erasure, distortion, and repetition, these works extend the tensions of the interview, keeping memory, history, and representation open and unsettled.

In Cleaning the FMK, Pavlo Kerestey tends to a monumental
stained-glass window ensemble at a plywood furniture factory in Uzhhorod,
Ukraine. The camera frames only part of the artwork, where we can discern words
symbolizing socialist values: "peace," "work," "liberty,"
"equality," and "fraternity." Kerestey climbs a ladder, carefully
cleaning the glass and metal structure. This simple act shifts the focus from
the grand narratives of the past to the delicate fate of both the artwork and
the artist himself. Kerestey performs and documents this small yet significant gesture of care towards an object that carries the
memory of a bygone era. In doing so, he highlights how the disappearance of
such objects would contribute to the erosion of both individual and collective
memories, emphasizing the fragility of history.

Version 2,Live Performance, ICA London, 2015Performance with DB Boyko (conduction), Jeff Morton (composition) and
the Liquid Trust choir (Raquel Borges, Alexandrina Brant, Alissa Clarke,
Christine Ellison, Blayne George, Ciara Healy)

Liquid
Trust is a collaborative work, featuring contributions from performer
Michele Sereda, musicians Ben Brown and Jeff
Morton, Vancouver-based singer and conductor DB Boyko, and achamber
choir. It has evolved over time, adapting to various exhibition contexts and
incorporating new collaborators with each iteration. The project has been
staged at venues including Western Front in Vancouver (2014), ICA London
(2015), GRAD Gallery in London (2016), Zenko Foundation in Lviv (2017), and Strauhof
Zurich (2021).

Liquid
Trust is a dynamic performance and video installation exploring the
accelerated states of labor,
leisure, and social interaction in contemporary life. Its visual narrative
unfolds through a series of video vignettes, evolving alongside multiple live
performances. In live presentations, the video becomes a backdrop for a choir,
while it also stands alone as an immersive video installation.

Sound,
music, and spoken word elements were crafted to resonate with the live&#38;nbsp; performances, transforming the original text into soundscapes and choral
compositions.

The
project draws inspiration from oxytocin, often referred to as the "trust
molecule" or "love hormone," which is linked to social bonding
and trust. This biological theme is paired with visual references to the
utopian visions of Superstudio, the
Italian radical architecture collective from the 1970s. They imagined a future
without physical buildings—conceptual "continuous monuments" of
hyper-connectivity and energy—yet never constructed anything tangible.

		<description>
“The strength of the system and my experiences of it, was that in fact, oddly enought, it was actually a very collaborative enterprise already”, 2006
Video: 35 mins“The Strength of the System and My
Experiences of It” is a 35-minute video. The work features a group of
performers in a studio and seminar setting. The performers address the camera
individually, sharing their thoughts on their own art-making processes and
reflecting on their roles as educators within institutional frameworks. The
script draws from real interviews with artist-teachers, who highlight the
collaborative and performative aspects of teaching, as well as its subversive
potential. This video critiques the commodification of art education while also
emphasizing the contradictions and complexities of working within the system

•It was exhibited as part of a group
show focused on the “Educational Turn,” exploring the relationship between art
practice and institutionalized learning, and reflecting on the political
dynamics within these environments
Based on interviews with:Kaucyla
Brooke, Brian Chatwin, Marcia Farquar, Michael Hauffen, Peter Suchin, Sari Tervaniemi.
Performed by: Suzanne Bon, Mansel David, Anna Rogalska Hedlund, Bo Nierhaus, Rosi Oelkers, Alison Sandford-Mackenzie, Sabine Roseburg

excerpts from the script:
“The strength of the system, my experiences of it, was that in fact, oddly enough, it was actually a very collaborative enterprise already. In the sense that if you put a lot of people together in an art school, sometimes all in a same room. And artists, being what they are they feed off each other, like crazy. (…) You are actually involved in this ongoing dialogue. (...) It’ s very lively. (…) And its proven that the that when people leave the school, they become perplexed, especially when they are being thrown into an isolated studio in the East End. All of that kind of interaction has disappeared and they are suddenly truncated. They are in the position of being an isolated individual.”
(…)
“I taught or started to teach because I needed an a job. I never felt secure enough to, for example, just move to New York and take a bunch of off jobs, to piece together some kind of living, to try and enter that very hard and intense urban art scene. (…) I wanted to enough of an income that I could depend on it, to know that I would have a certain vacation schedule in a way. The other thing that appealed to me was the kind of work and pleasure in following students research.”
(…)
“Using your mind to do research for students, (…) the work you do to keeps your brains harp, (…) as in teaching the better for your whole creative process. Whatever happens in your brain you know you have to think of new channels. And this is what I’m interested to do in my life. “(…)“A lot of times with my friends we have said, wow, if we could only start our own school, you know then it could be exactly the way we want to be. And then I’ve never been quite sure about that, because those same friends have been on hiring committees and then have not hired the people who would presumably be the ones that would all start the school with together. There is some thing that is so political about the art world, you know, in terms of way, that people, colleagues, do and don’t support each other, and that’s the thing that I, I don’t know how I would change it, but I think it would make a big difference, if you worked in a place (and there are many places that are much harsher to be than CA, in some way) but it would be really amazing to work in a place where your colleagues were supportive and interested in what you are working on.
And you also were the same towards your colleagues and the administration was also supportive and interested in what you were working on. And the students, you know, felt instead of, like consumers, which is now a lot of the position of students, especially it they are paying for their education, instead of feeling like consumers (I’m not sure if I’m getting my money’s worth) the students were in a way, just a part of the project. Excited to be working around working faculty and administration that was engaged with, …, or celebrating the work the faculty was doing. That sounds very huggy-kissy, but I mean it in a way, of being informed about what the faculty are doing and to engage in the intellectual aspect of the project and also finding ways for the faculty to get more exposure, better fitting venues, etc.

perfomers:Mansel David, Igor Guelman-Zak, Lyndsey Housden, Alison Mackenzie, Eun-Jung Lee, Christer Lundahl, Michael MosolShezad Dawood invited us to collaborate on staging an artist studio in a residential apartment in London’s Knightsbridge. We decided to transform the apartment into a recording studio, further exploring the theme of storytelling. Working with a group of artist friends as performers, all of whom had personal histories of immigration to London (from Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Sweden, and Wales), we performed Arbeit/Rabota.

For the exhibition, we divided the apartment: the lower level became a dark, mirrored studio/living space, while the upper level was configured as a light-filled gallery. The video evolves as the performers navigate and inhabit the plush Knightsbridge setting, rehearsing for an interview that deconstructs the very process of performing. The focus shifted to entrances, rehearsals, the documentation process, the set, and the mechanics of the space—highlighting repetition, looping, re-enactment, awkwardness, and delay. The work emphasized notions of time and how artistic practice and experience are constructed, calling attention to the often unseen labor behind the scenes
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; “In the video recorded in a single 15-minute take and titled &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Work/Arbeit/Rabota, seven people of various ages, races and dispositions wander around the blacked-out room, followed by the camera and its operator, both occasionally visible within the mirrors, an autocue positioned above the lens feeding the stalked participant their lines, When the camera closes in on someonem he or show speaks directly to it: "I had this dream. I was superman and my father was a clairvoyant," utters a young blonde woman. Others talk of revolution, of the economic system, or ask, "What is the work? We bought some work, we made some work." Individuals and utterances are by these methods and devices, divorced and dislocated; we know the actors lines have been chosen for them. This crude ventriloquism takes a further twist when one discovers that the script was assembled from interviews the members of Szuper Gallery (Susanne Clausen and Pawlo Kerestey) carried out with each other, and that the people in the video stand in, in some not entirely clarified manner for the artists at an earlier stage of their by now extensive, somewhat variegated artistic practice."
